The Daily Nugs
Hey, hey, hey, we have more than enough music for you to be shaking your bones all day long. Get in the groove and let the good times roll...
On this day back in 1969, the Dead opened for Iron Butterfly and nearly scared the headliners from the stage with their mind-blowing set. With a Dark Star> Stephen> Eleven for the ages, 23 minutes of a Pig-led and Dead-fed Lovelight, and a seething Other One suite, it is easy to why IB might have been afraid to follow the boys. Give it all a listen and read more about the night at Grateful Dead of the Day.
In 1983, the Dead went up to a Girl Scout camp in Novato and played around with a few tunes. None of the material ever made it into the rotation, leaving us with nothing more than a few intriguing recording sessions. But you can still listen to the boys taking a couple cracks at the sound sculpture of a tune, Victory.
By the second show of 1989, the Dead had cleared out the cobwebs and were ready to rock. A melancholy but so tasty Sugaree, stellar Scarlet> LL Rain, and soaring Stella are just some of the highlights. Check it all out.
Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys passed away on this day in 1998. But at least he got to play with the Grateful Dead, back in 1971, before he went. In honor of Carl, listen to that show and read more about the Beach Boys and the Dead.
