Ain't no foolin'...back on this day in 1991, Jerry, Bruce, and the rest of the boys finished off the two-night run at the Greensboro Coliseum in spectacular fashion with a Straw opener and a sweet Bird Song to end the first set. In the second they hit nirvana with an inimitable China> Rider and the rest of the Dark Star and Playin' that they had started the night before. Springtime in the South was very good to the boys! Listen and watch the entire show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Here we have two hours of Jerry and Phil spinning records and talking music and everything else with Tom "Big Daddy" Donahue on San Francisco's KMPX back in 1967. As Jerry says on the recording, "far out!!!" Check it out.
To open the second set on this April Fool's Day, Phil pranked Jerry by having Barney the purple dinosaur come out in his stead and play Iko Iko. As Phil relates, "the expression on his face was that of a man who didn’t believe what he was seeing - a very rare situation for him." Read more about the events and listen to the show. Watch And you can watch Phil's 1993 April Fool's joke on Jerry in stunning clarity as well.
Check out the Dead breakout Al Green's Take Me To The River at the Pyramid in Memphis on this day in 1995. The rendition lands somewhere between Green's R&B and The Talking Heads's New Wave. Dig it and the rest of the show now!
The Dead come out on the first of April in 1980 and do Promised Land with everyone on different instruments: Jerry and Brent on drums, Bob on keys, Billy on bass, Phil on lead guitar, and Mickey on rhythm. They then switched back to their regular spots and played the tune again. The super cool thing is that the first one is not half bad. Check it out for yourself.
