A very happy birthday to Ram Rod! Arriving at 710 Ashbury back in the day, he knocked on the door and told Mickey, "Name’s Ram Rod. Kesey sent me. I hear you need a good man." Ram Rod went on to become the crew chief and so much more, the rock at the center of the Dead. Read more about Ram Rod and his many exploits with the band.
On the last night of spring tour back in '82, the Dead delivered a sumptuous first set, including an excruciatingly beautiful Peggy-O, and a top-flight second half. But the highlight of the show is Drums - where Mickey crushes the beam - and Phil's Raven Space, which is downright freaky, channeling Poe in his hometown. Listen to the entire night and read more about the beam and the Apocalypse Now sessions at Grateful Dead of the Day.
In the midst of the oft-overlooked spring ’78 tour, the Dead turned in another burner in Columbus, starting off with incredible energy on Bertha and firing right through to the first Werewolves ever in the encore. There is so much good stuff here, including an absolutely lovely Must Have Been the Roses and laid-back and luscious Estimated> He’s Gone, not to mention the Other One> Wharf Rat. Listen to the audience clap and howl along with Bobby and Donna’s vamping on the He’s Gone and all the rest.
Celebrated every April 19th, Bicycle Day commemorates the first time that Albert Hofmann intentionally ingested LSD. "Little by little I could begin to enjoy the unprecedented colors and plays of shapes," Hofmann wrote about the experience, though he could never imagine it would be used recreationally as the Dead and Deadheads did so well. Celebrate Bicycle Day the right way and read more about Hofmann's exploits in the name of science!
