On this day in 1971, the Dead opened their last run at the hallowed Fillmore East. Along the way, they dropped the only Friend of the Devil of the year, played a rare and lovely I Second That Emotion, delivered a spine-tingling Dew, and, with Pig in the fore, raged through another epic Good Lovin'. What a show! Listen to the whole night and read more at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On the cusp of their epic run through May '77, the boys continued casting their spring magic, starting off with a mellow, but lovely first set before embarking on an electrifying second half crowned by a Wharf Rat for the ages, complete with a massive jam and nestled within a Playin' sandwich. Listen now!
That ‘77 show was part of a three-show stand at John Scher's Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey. In the friendly confines, the concerts were filmed, giving us the incredible pleasure of enjoying some of that spring '77 magic on video. Take in this gem of a Scarlet Begonias with its magical transition into an explosive Fire On The Mountain.
