Completing their three-night run at the Manhattan Center, the Dead put on a command performance. There is so much great stuff - including a breakout of Hog For You Baby - in this show, but the Good Lovin’ is at the center of it all. Pig is all over the tune, going crazy and telling people to take their clothes off as only Pig can. Billy also delivers, providing a rolling beat and a lively, intense segment in the middle of the tune. Coming out of that Drums segment, Jerry fires off an electric jam that is mesmerizing, leading right back to Pig’s vocals. This is true Dead bliss in its 1971 form. The previous week in 1989 had been a heady one on the University of Michigan’s campus. Saturday, April 1st, the annual Hash Bash celebration occurred, bringing thousands to the Diag in the center of campus at high noon to support cannabis legalization and smoke publicly. Two days later, the Michigan Wolverines basketball team won the National Championship over Seton Hall. Then, midweek, the Grateful Dead roll into town. The first show was hot with a rare Dupree’s, but on the second night, Heads were primed for the band to reach even greater heights. And the Dead did not disappoint. A filthy Little Red Rooster and lovely Bird Song highlight the early going before a Scarlet> Fire, Playin> Built To Last, and Other One> Wharf Rat anchor the monster second half. Listen to it all and read more.
