On the second night of the Europe '72 tour, the Dead played a show of utter beauty. The perfection of the Dark Star> Sugar Mags> Caution is impossible to put in words. Having fully integrated Keith into the Dead sound, the boys were tearing down the gates of Europe. Listen to the entire show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day back in 1967, the Dead appeared on the TV show, The Maze, alongside Quicksilver Messenger Service and The Wildflowers. Ralph Gleason interviewed Jerry and Phil, and the boys played Cream Puff War. Listen to the entirety of this cool little piece of Dead history.
In 1991, an Eyes and Morning Dew bookend the second set, and both are tremendous. First comes the Eyes, which Jerry lights up, spurred on by some tasty runs from Bruce and the thundering drumming of Mickey and Billy. On the Dew, Jerry slowly builds to the awful occasion, tearing into a ripping jam before his last somber verse. Then he comes forth with MIDI horns and lays out a serene, yet apocalyptic sonic narrative, feeding what becomes a seething crescendo of aching splendor. You can take in the Eyes and Dew along with the rest of Hunter Seamon's matrix.
