On Jerry's birthday back in 1973, the Dead delivered a fitting celebration at Roosevelt Stadium. The playing is intense throughout the evening, culminating in a heady Dark Star> El Paso> Eyes> Morning Dew> Sugar Mags that is just mesmerizing. Celebrate Jerry coming into the world and listen to this tremendous show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On Jerry's 40th birthday, the Dead played to the animals of the city zoo, 500 drunk bikers, and about six thousand other souls in Oklahoma City. The heat and birthday celebrations took a toll on the band, but they still delivered, especially with the Playin'> Iko> Playin'> Sailor> Saint that opened the second set. Take it all in.
On this day in 1969, the only Dead show without Jerry happened at Chet Helms's Family Dog. Instead of playing with his brothers, Jerry was outside in the Dead's equipment truck, mediating a dispute between Helms and the Light Artist Guild, who were picketing the venue. After a lot of good weed and a cherry bomb, Jerry got the two sides to come to an agreement, paving the way for the full band to take the stage at the Dog the next night. Sadly, a tape of the Jerry-less Dead doesn't seem to exist and all we have are a few scattered reports about what went down inside the venue. But read all about the strife, Jerry's mad negotiating skills, and the Dead's response to it all.
