The Dead delivered a stellar show on this day in 1980. Brent really takes over, dominating on the keys and adding a tasty angle to Minglewood. Bobby is also in rare form, giving his high-pitched “thank you” after Good Lovin’ and shouting out “polka time” in the middle of a hot Mexicali. The second set is pure lusciousness too, with a classic Scarlet> Fire> Drums> Wheel> Truckin'> Wharf Rat. Give a listen the entire night at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Help> Slip> Franklin's opens the show at Shoreline in 1991, but things get even richer in the second half starting with a Smokestack Lightning> He's Gone. A primordial Space also opens into the Dark Star theme - more a tease than a jam - before easily one of the best Morning Dews of the later years surges forth. The real story of the night, though, is Bruce. He sparks an inventive ten-minute jam post-He's Gone and delivers sublime keys throughout, most notably in the Dew. You are going to want to give this show a listen.
