Coming on the heels of Woodstock, Bullfrog was a relatively small festival that took place on this day in 1969. When the town refused to give a permit, an older woman offered up her property. The Dead returned the favor with a sensational set ending with a completely ridiculous Dark Star> Stephen> Eleven> Lovelight. Fire up and give it a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
During the eighties, the Dead played twenty shows at Alpine Valley. And here in 1980 during the first of those, it’s clear why that amphitheater became a bastion of summer tour; the Dead deliver a raucous, high energy effort, and the crowd just eats it up, roaring and clapping throughout the evening. Everything is so good, but don’t miss the ferocious, insatiable Music Never Stopped and the hearty He’s Gone which features a lengthy band-crowd chorus collaboration before the boys light out on an incendiary jam. Listen to it all.
