As the Dead bust out of the gate with Cold Rain and Snow on this day in '72, the rich and commanding sound and perfect delivery is immediately apparent. And the rest of the evening is much the same, including an estimable Playin' and a raging Truckin'> Other One, the latter of which is sadly clipped, ending the recording. A mixup between Betty Cantor and Bear, who had just been released from prison, resulted in the cut tape, but what we have is truly spectacular. Give it a listen and imagine what other gems from this night are lost to history at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The Dead kicked off a three-night run at Shoreline back in 1993 with a hot mix of music, including one of the best So Many Roads of all time. The classic foursome of Scarlet> Fire and Estimated> Eyes - clocking in at nearly an hour - is not to be missed along with a top-shelf Watchtower> Attics out of Space. And don't sleep on the Peggy-O, FOTD, and Promised Land in the first set either. Dig it.
