On this day in '69, violinist David LaFlamme and jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd joined the band at their psychedelic apogee for an incredible night of music. Lloyd and Jerry find common ground in the Dark Star, leading the band on a jazz tour-de-force. And the Alligator that Dark Star finally segues into is an outstanding cacophony with Tom Constanten whirling his calliope keys, LaFlamme sawing in a spacey fiddle, Lloyd throwing in his horn, and the rest of the band laying it on while Pig rumbles through on vocals; only the Grateful Dead could make this work so beautifully. The entire show is like this, so you should get over and listen to this thing of beauty at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Today was one of the best shows of '82. And you should absolutely not sleep on the first set with its opening Half-Step> Franklin's> Minglewood, killer Cumberland, and brilliant Peggy-O and Althea. But a dense, mega-disco Shakedown starts off an equally hot second half, including a masterful To Lay Me Down and He's Gone> Other One> Stella out of Space. Give this keeper a thorough listen.
