In 1969, the boys were a bunch of psychedelic virtuosos who threw down at every show. And today's show from that year puts the Dead's powers on full display. The Dark Star - coming in at 30 minutes - is an absolutely beatific trip, serving as the fulcrum of the show and, arguably, its highlight. But there is also a magisterial Dew in the early going and a steamy, whirling Stephen> Eleven on the back end. Give the entire show a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Tickets for today's show in 1985 got you into Six Flags Astroworld, where the amphitheater was located, leading to patchouli and weed blanketing the steamy amusement park while Heads frolicked in the beer garden and road laps on the roller coaster. It was all the perfect setup for a hot - literally triple digits with near 100% humidity - night of music. While the show was on the shorter side, the Dead delivered with a captivating Bird Song in the sumptuous first set, a brilliant Morning Dew to end the second, and a sensational, frolicking Sugar Mags encore. Listen to it all.
Watch vid of Pig and the boys from this day in 1970 at KQED Studios, including Easy Wind and UJB. The video is 28 minutes long and includes Easy Wind, Uncle John’s Band, Candyman, and more.
