There is another sweet show from Roosevelt Stadium on this day in 1976. Phil drops some serious bombs, and the rest of the band goes off throughout. Don't miss the Sugaree and Scarlet in the first set. But it is the second half that will really blow you away, starting with a Help> Slip> Franklin's out of the break. From there, it is a disco inferno of a Dancin' and, a bit later, a NFA> Drums> Other One that is off the hook. But don't take our word for it, give the entire show a good listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The 25-minute stand-alone Playin' and the Weather Report Suite> Jam> Wharf Rat are the absolute standouts of this Wall of Sound show from the Philadelphia Civic Center. But the band was on throughout the evening, so fire up the entire night of music.
After Owsley's bail got revoked after the New Orleans bust, the Dead arranged to play at the federal prison where he was incarcerated. Dosing the prisoners and guards, the Dead stormed the prison library, delivering a tight but oh-so-good 19-song set in their two-hour window. Listen to the soundboard that Bear made of the show and imagine how thrilled he was to have this moment of reprieve.
Anytime you have the Dead on video in the 70s, you have something special indeed. But this 1976 tape is lovingly remastered and such a hot show including the Help> Slip> Franklin's, heady Other One, and all-round fantastic playing. Feast your eyes and your ears!
