The boys open the second set on this day in 1971 with a brilliant Dark Star, which heads into a mellow, yet searingly groovy Deal. Much of the remainder of the set is built around a meaty Lovelight. All told, the Lovelight is the equal of any of the monstrous, down and dirty ones from the previous year as Pig sings, raps, and downright bawls while the band goes off. And, listening in retrospect, this rendition conjures more than a bit of melancholy, being the fifth to last Lovelight that Pig would front, and really the last truly exceptional one of those. Give a good listen to this wonderful show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Check out the band's triumphant return to the stage after Jerry's 1986 coma in this beautifully remastered video. There was nary a dry eye in the venue, and you will see why: the Candyman is back in town! Take it all in at Grateful Dead of the Day.
