Stella and Wharf Rat are in the same set, which is rare indeed and so splendid. But there is so much more than just that here in this inimitable '73 show, including a raging end to the first half with Big River, Deal, and WRS. But the real crux is the meaty center of the second set: Playin'> Mind Left Body> He's Gone> Truckin'. Listen to all the goodness at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Pig had just returned from sick leave the night before, and he makes his presence felt and then some in this 1971 show. He is determinedly potent on a definitive version of Smokestack Lightning, but it is the Lovelight, in the midst of a Not Fade Away sandwich, that is the absolute crux of the show. Pig’s organ also adds to so many songs throughout the night, none more so than Black Peter. But the Dead as a whole are on fire throughout the evening and on the cusp of that characteristically magical Europe ’72 sound. Listen to it all.
