Back in 1968, the Dead played the famed Shrine Auditorium, home of the Academy Awards and Grammys for decades, in downtown Los Angeles. There is only a clipped recording of the night available, but it includes a phenomenal first-ever Mountains of the Moon, a tasty Eleven, and a stellar Lovelight with Pig alternating between wailing, talk-singing, and flat-out rapping as the boys throw in some smoking jams. Listen to the extant tape now at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day in 1967, Owsley Stanley, progenitor of the finest acid around and good friend and sound man of the Grateful Dead was arrested for possession of over 350,000 doses of LSD. Read more about the arrest and Bear's immense impact on the Dead.
