The band is a tight raging monster on this evening in 1968, and the only thing to complain about is the fact that the entire recording is only an hour long. Lovelight opens the action. And while Pig does not reach into the depths of his miscreant mind for some real bawdy additions to the lyrics, he is riled up and foaming at the mouth as he fronts the boys, who storm through the song like they are possessed. It was at the three-day 1969 New Year's run that began on this date that Ned Lagin, the electronic music trailblazer and early 1970s quasi-member of the Dead, first saw the band and instantly got on the bus. While we only have a partial video of the show from the San Francisco Civic Auditorium on this day in 1984, the tape has the entirety of the second set: Samson> Terrapin> Playin', then Truckin'> Stella> NFA with a Brokedown encore.
