On this day back in 1982, the boys unleashed an unusual Touch> Throwin’> Franklin’s, an incendiary Truckin' into a haunting Stella, and a lot of other ridiculousness, but the encore might be the highlight of the entire show with Etta James and the Tower of Power horns sitting in. Etta chooses to bring out Hard To Handle, which had not been played since Pig fronted it back in ’71. You'll miss Pig’s inimitable presence, but Etta and the boys more than do it justice with the horns killing it on a funk-filled version. The Tower of Power then blow in a Jerry-fueled, smoking version of Tell Mama, the Clarence Carter tune that Etta made super famous. Listen to it all at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Basketball legend and Deadhead extraordinaire Bill Walton pulled some strings to get the band into the sumptuous home locker room before this show. Of course, the boys brought a nitrous tank into the showers, provoking a scene straight out of "Hippies Gone Wild" as coeds and Deadheads stripped off their clothes, slaked gas out of the hoses, and frolicked in the cascading water. The Dead played a fabulous show as a well with a second set for the ages. Read all about the festivities and listen to the music.
The Grateful Dead on crisp video at Winterland in 1977…I shouldn't need to say more. But there is an absolutely scorching Estimated> Eyes> Stephen> Sugar Mags among so many other gems. You won't want to miss this remastered masterpiece; treat your eyes and ears at Grateful Dead of the Day.
