On this day in 1970, the Dead played a legendary show at the Fillmore East. Things really start cranking as the Dark Star takes off and the guys from the Allmans, Fleetwood Mac, and Love join the Dead on stage. With everyone flat-out wailing, the boys drive the music into a scintillating Spanish Jam that cascades into a – superlatives won’t do it justice – Lovelight. Phil recalled the show fondly as one of their best, and remembers walking out the loading dock door, “it’s daylight, and snow is falling gently on the streets of New York….We stand there, our breath steaming, and look east down the crosstown side street. A distended orange sun is rising between the buildings, casting lurid shadows on the fresh snow. I grab Bob and Jerry in a group embrace: This is what it’s all about.” We could not agree more. Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The first set heads out of the gate with China>Rider and runs headlong through to a lovely Bird Song into The Music Never Stopped and Might As Well. But the second half is where it is at with the Neville Brother joining the boys, starting with a Drums>Iko and continuing on to a heady Eyes and magisterial Stella into a rousing NFA. Phil skips the encore, but Bobby rocks the tambourine through the three song capper. Give it all a listen.
With a rare post-Space Eyes, a magisterial Standing on the Moon, and a lovely Bird Song, the Dead bring it on this day in 1989. Give it all a listen over at Grateful Dead of the Day. And that great 1989 show - Bird Song to close the second set, China> Rider to open the second, that towering Standing On The Moon, Eyes out of Space, etc. - is also available on video with a crisp soundboard for audio. Go ahead and treat your ears and eyes at Grateful Dead of the Day!
