Back in '82, the Dead kicked off the year at the Warfield. The hometown crowd howls their approval at every turn as the boys roll through a classic early 80s setlist, including a sweet Shakedown opener and tasty Althea. But the four pre-Drums tunes - China> Rider> Playin'> Terrapin are the meat of the show with Brent and Jerry just tearing it up. It must have been truly special to see the Dead in the Warfield's resplendent surroundings with the Deadhead community out in force. But we are fortunate to be able to enjoy it still. Head over to Grateful Dead of the Day and give it a listen.
With a Dear Mr. Fantasy that made at least one aging hippy in the audience completely lose his shit, the show from this date early in the Dead's 1988 campaign is not to be missed. In addition to all the regular fireworks, Batucaje, the San Francisco-based Brazilian drum and dance group, joined the Dead for a Fat Tuesday celebration at this show. Read more about Batucaje and their time with the Dead.
