The Dead kicked off a legendary six-show 1971 run at the Cap by debuting five tunes, including Playin', GSET, Bertha, and Loser. But the absolute standout of the night was the very first Wharf Rat inside the tastiest Dark Star sandwich imaginable, about which Lesh said decades later, “Oh, that’s just gorgeous. Ah, that, that…I’m sorry, that just, that brought tears to my eyes.” Sadly, it was also the last night Mickey was with the band until the hiatus. Revel in the music of this monumental show at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Jerry’s vocals are uneven, and the song selection is a little odd in this first show of 1985. But at least the latter complaint makes for some interesting moments, like the He’s Gone> Spoonful> Eyes and the Baby What You Want Me To Do rarity. But above it all, the Drums> Space> China Doll trip makes this show worthy of a listen. Cue it up and enjoy!
