Despite Mickey's absence, the magic continued in the second night of the '71 Cap run as the boys debuted Deal and Bird Song and brought together The Other One and Wharf Rat for the first time. Pigpen was also on fire making fine work of Smokestack Lightnin’, Easy Wind, and Good Lovin’. The China> Rider is a real treat, especially Jerry’s soulful, evocative jamming in the latter tune. Billed as the Frontiers of Science Celestial Synapse, the Dead headlined the evening with a four hour set back in 1969. Unfortunately, we don't have the tapes, but we do have some more on the show, including a report from Rolling Stone. Click on over to Grateful Dead of the Day to read more.
Though we only have the second set from this date in 1973, this is some magical shit. Phil drops bombs throughout causing some Heads around the internet to call this his best effort of all time. Regardless of how it rates on the Phil-O-Meter, the show is absolutely ferocious. Cue up the show.
On this day in 1991, the Dead broke out New Speedway Boogie for the first time since 1970. We do have a recording of this gem of a show and the crowd's reaction to the breakout.
