From Grateful Dead of the Day
The Dead arrived in St. Louis after a three-night run in New Orleans, made famous by the police bust on the first night. Bear and much of the boys' equipment was still in the lock-up, but Bob Heil, the organist at the Fox Theater, wired up a sound system for the show and ended up finishing out the tour with the band. What we get is a steamy Dark Star> Stephen> Mason's Children and some stand-out contributions by Pig on Lovelight and Hard to Handle. Here we have a monster of a Viola Lee followed by a sharp little Cryptical>Other One>Cryptical which itself leads into Clementine before a tantalizing clipped two minutes of Schoolgirl. Listen to this 1968 beauty that is sadly incomplete.
After a scorching Schoolgirl, someone in the crowd seems to complain about it being too loud, provoking Jerry, who responds, "We come all the way across the country and leave the comfort and beauty of California and come out here to cold, miserable Minnesota, man. And what do we get? What do we get? People who can’t dig it. Too weird." Jerry has a point; this show is so hot, a fine piece of psychedelic rock, that it is hard to imagine anyone finding fault with it. Give it a listen for yourself.
