Happy birthday to Vince Welnick! To celebrate the day, listen to some of Vince's best shows and read more about his career and time with the Dead at Grateful Dead of the Day.
There were only a handful of shows that Bruce missed in '91, including today's, but the Dead - and Vince - more than deliver in his absence. The boys bust out of the gate with a spectacular Help> Slip> Franklin's that is super sharp and totally jammed out, but also has a placid and ethereal quality. Vince dominated Little Red Rooster and a funky Memphis Blues later in the set, but the real sweet stuff - including a monster Terrapin, which the crowd deserved after a full-on tease earlier in the set, and an Eyes out of Space, the last time the band played that combination - goes down in the second half. Listen to it all at Grateful Dead of the Day.
This 1969 gem is something special, from the Schoolgirl through the Dark Star> Stephen> Eleven, to the Lovelight and Dew. Give it all a listen and don't miss Phil's NSFW scream on Doin' That Rag!
Over at Grateful Dead of the Day, we have a really interesting rehearsal from this day in 1992 that lets you hear the band work through So Many Roads and, rather quickly, arrive at the general version that they will fire up in concert. But what really makes this recording special is the awesome back-and-forth between the band members, especially Bobby and Jerry, offering a special glimpse into the Dead.
It is already our Dead of the Day, but here is a second opportunity to take in that Help> Slip> Franklin's, Playin'> Uncle John's> Terrapin, and Eyes out of Space, this time on video. Click on over to Grateful Dead of the Day.
