Any time you can get a show from 1966, you have something special on your hands. And true to form, each song from today’s show in that year is a spectacular gem, sparkling beautifully as you turn it around in your mind. For instance, the Rider has more than a bit of that high lonesome sound that Garcia was searching for in his early sixties bluegrass days. Hey Little One is like some sweet Beach Boys tune, but with a hard, hide your daughter edge. And lurking in the Cold Rain & Snow is that familiar 60s psychedelic Dead, which emerges even more fully developed in the King Bee> Caution. Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
After some good tunes in the first half including a top-shelf Little Red Rooster, the second set comes out firing on this day in 1990 with a charged China> Rider, an excellent Just a Little Light, and a solid Estimated. The Eyes might not be as magisterial as other 1990 ones, but it is still a sweet segue into Drums. And the band caps it all with a really fine Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door. Fire this fun show up!
On this date in 1992, Mickey and Zakir Hussain, among others, won a Grammy for Planet Drum. Mickey and Zakir have a long relationship dating back to when Zakir’s father was touring the States and dropped his teenage son off at Mickey’s Novato ranch, right into a multi-day drug fueled jam session with Jerry, David Crosby, and others. Read more about Zakir, his history, and his time sitting in with the Dead.
Until tomorrow, spread the love and enjoy the music!
