Remember the joy at first listening to the Dark Star> Stephen on Live/Dead? Well, on this day in 1969, the show from which that little masterpiece emerged went down. But as you take in the entire recording here, you will wonder how Bear ever made the decision to forgo the mind-blowing matter that fills the rest of this show. The Other One Suite is a thoroughbred of face-melting jamming, the Eleven is perfection embodied as the band streaks through the nursery rhyme-like lyrics and stretches the possibilities of musical exploration, and Pigpen delivers on Schoolgirl and Lovelight, making you realize anew what a consummate bluesman and provocateur he was. The show will blow your doors off. Listen to it and read more about Live/Dead at Grateful Dead of the Day.
After debuting the night before, Terrapin finds its place in the second set and is even more wonderful this time around. The boys follow it up with a face-melting Dew that then bursts forth into the utter release of Sugar Mags. But that is all post-Drums; there is so much more here, including a lovely Peggy-O, romping Scarlet, and thundering Stephen> NFA. It is only the second show of the year for the boys, but the 1977 campaign is already in full swing! Get on it now.
On Fat Tuesday in 1990, the Grammy-winning masters of Cajun music, BeauSoleil, joined the Dead on stage for a few tunes, creating smiles all around. Read more about BeauSoleil and their time with the Dead and check out a great three-camera video of the Mardi Gras parade into an amazing Aiko featuring the Dead with BeauSoleil.
Back on this day in 1994, Jerry teases - or flat out starts to play - Cosmic Charlie as the boys come out of The Other One, blowing minds and leaving everyone a little disappointed as the band veers into Wharf Rat instead. Check it out for yourself over at Grateful Dead of the Day.
