Remember the joy at first listening to the Dark Star> Stephen on Live/Dead? Well this is the show from which that little masterpiece emerged. But as you take in the entire recording here, you will wonder how Bear ever made the decision to forgo the mind-blowing matter that fills the rest of this show. The Other One Suite is a thoroughbred of face-melting jamming, the Eleven is perfection embodied as the band streaks through the nursery rhyme-like lyrics and stretches the possibilities of musical exploration, and Pigpen delivers on Schoolgirl and Lovelight, making you realize anew what a consummate bluesman and provocateur he was. The show will blow your doors off. Listen to it and read more about Live/Dead at Grateful Dead of the Day.
After debuting the night before, Terrapin finds its place in the second set and is even more wonderful this time around. The boys follow it up with a face-melting Dew that then bursts forth into the utter release of Sugar Mags. But that is all post-Drums; there is so much more here, including a lovely Peggy-O, romping Scarlet, and thundering Stephen> NFA. It is only the second show of the year for the boys, but the '77 campaign is already in full swing! Get on it now.
Back on this day in 1994, Jerry teases - or flat out starts to play - Cosmic Charlie as the boys come out of The Other One, blowing minds and leaving everyone a little disappointed as the band veers into Wharf Rat instead. Check it out for yourself over at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Over at Grateful Dead of the Day, check out this great three-camera video of the 1990 Mardi Gras parade into an amazing Aiko featuring the Grateful Dead and the incredible Cajun band BeauSoleil. You can also read more about the BeauSoleil and their time with the Dead in our post about the Grammy-winning band.
A very happy birthday to Chelsea Clinton! When her dad was president and she was just thirteen, Chelsea attended an RFK Dead show, teenybopper friends and Secret Service in tow. She ended up hanging backstage with Jerry and Bobby, but not before Bear accosted her...and almost got accosted himself by the Secret Service. Read more about the experience at Grateful Dead of the Day.
