Who wants a Lovelight sandwich? Raging Lovelights bracket this show while some phenomenal treats hang out in the middle, including a beauty of an acoustic Monkey and the Engineer, the last Mason's Children, and a steely Other One. Brilliant and exploratory throughout, the boys harness the psychedelic China Cat into a peppier pop canter, create - or abort - a perfect 40 second Caution jam, and turn heads and melt faces at every opportunity. Read about Mason's Children, the Family Dog, and more while listening to this 1970 classic.
This frighteningly hot show is a nearly perfect compendium of the best jam-ready tunes the Dead were playing in 1969 with the Other One suite, Dark Star> Stephen> Eleven, and Alligator> Caution. Most of these, expectedly, break into utter madness and mayhem as Jerry and the boys do all they can to absolutely melt your face. Like so much of 1969, this show is phenomenal. Check it out.
This is one of those pieces of Dead history that you just have to check out: a jam session from Bob Weir's studio during the band's hiatus. While the tunes might not melt your face, these jams will certainly remind you of the vast musical repertoire, styles, and cultures the band brought to the table and the variety of phrasings the Dead could conjure. And there is all the banter between tunes as the boys discuss equipment and playing. Listen to it all.
There are points in the night where Dead do not quite plumb the full depths of their potential. But complaining about 1973 shows is for losers! And the second set does end with an awesome Promised Land, Truckin’> Other One> Eyes> Morning Dew, Sugar Magnolia and then an enchanting We Bid You Goodnight encore. Listen and smile at the '73 goodness at Grateful Dead of the Day.
