On the coldest day of 1978 in Iowa, the boys brought the heat to the UNI Dome. After his mic malfunctions, Jerry lights off on a sweltering jam in the midst of Samson. Then the band fires up what some consider to be the best Scarlet> Fire ever, and who are we to argue. The second set continues to smoke as the Dead play Truckin'> Drums> Other One> Wharf Rat before closing it out with a steamy Around and Around. Give the entire set a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day. the Grateful Dead opened their 1989 campaign on what had become home turf of sorts, the Kaiser Convention Center. The boys debut Standing On The Moon and We Can Run, deliver a high energy Stranger> Franklin's Tower, a euphoric Man Smart Woman Smarter, and a stellar Morning Dew, to name just a few of the early year treats. Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
As we just mentioned, in 1989, the Dead played their first show of the year on this date, opening with Touch of Grey. Read more about all the Dead's first shows of the year over at Grateful Dead of the Day.
