1986 was not kind to the Dead. But the boys still delivered some mesmerizing moments during that year, including the Franklin's> Playin’> China Doll> Playin’ Jam on this day at the Kaiser. Listen to the entire show and read more at Grateful Dead of the Day.
And you can also check out this crisp remastered video of that 1986 show.
A mediocre 1970 show is still a damn good Grateful Dead show. And that is exactly what we have here. The Smokestack Lightning out of the gate will blow your doors off, and there is a good bit of magic through the rest of the evening, including an epic Lovelight closer. Give it all a listen.
On this date in 2009, Mickey and Zakir Hussain, among others, won a Grammy for the Global Drum Project album. Read more about Zakir and his time with the Dead, including the multi-day jam session in which Zakir sat in on as a teenager after his father dropped him off at Mickey's for a couple days.
A big Prankster happy birthday to Neal Cassady, that indomitable spirit who so influenced the Grateful Dead, the counterculture, American letters, and so much more. Read more about Cassady and the Dead and celebrate his life at Grateful Dead of the Day.
