Though the first half is mighty fine, the second set from this day in 1978 is something truly special. A perfectly rendered Sunrise brings it into a dank and pregnant Terrapin. From there, we get an inventive, charging Playin' that reaches some elementally spacey territory - almost like they mic'ed bugs scurrying across the stage - before a heady bass and drum exploration takes over. Before too long, they sidle into a rousing Stephen, which lifts off in a stratospheric jam, turning into a righteous NFA with its own deep jamming exploration before the final, exuberant release of the Playin' reprise. Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The Big Man himself, Clarence Clemon, came into this world on this day in 1942. While he is obviously best known as Bruce Springsteen's beloved comrade on the sax, Clarence was good friends with Jerry and Bobby and played several shows with the Dead. Read all about the relationship between the Big Man and the Dead.
