On this day back in 1980, the Dead headlined a Cambodian refugee benefit that Joan Baez put together. The boys start off with a Straw> Franklin's and don't look back. Santana and John Cippolina even get in on the action with Not Fade Away, creating one of those special moments when the guests mesh perfectly with the boys. Later in the day, in the midst of an ensemble Land Of A Thousand Dances, Baez introduces Jerry, who goes off on a sweet, mellow little run. You can listen to that and the entirety of the Dead's set at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Happy birthday to Mickey's son, Taro Hart. Taro was a drummer even before he was born, setting the beat for Mickey’s album, Music to Be Born By, in utero. And Taro went on to join the Dead on stage at just six years old during the 1989 New Year's Eve show. Since then, Taro has continued to play the drums, but has also become a consummate guitar player and songwriter. Read more about Taro Hart and watch him play along with the boys.
