On this day in 1967, the Dead played the Human Be-In. Hailed as the "gathering of the tribes," it brought together some 30,000 people from across the countercultural spectrum in Golden Gate Park, ushering in what would become the Summer of Love. The boys did their part, bringing a Dancin' in the Streets and sending Allen Ginsberg into a state of ecstatic exuberance. Read more about the day and listen to some of the music.
Happy birthday to Ken Babbs, one of the founding members of the Merry Pranksters, closest friend of Ken Kesey, and psychedelic provocateur extraordinaire. Ken joined the Dead on stage so many times over the years. To celebrate Ken's birthday, read more about the man and listen to a few of his guest appearances with the Dead.
We also have a new entry in our Grateful Dead Guests series, on Norton Buffalo. Bay Area harmonica virtuoso, Buffalo was the long-time harp player for the Steve Miller Band, played the iconic harmonica on Bonnie Raitt’s cover of Runaway, formed High Noon together with Mickey Hart and Merle Saunders, and frequently sat in with the Jerry Garcia Band. Buffalo also made it on stage with the Dead for a few songs, including a memorable West LA Fadeaway and Spoonful. Read more about Buffalo and listen to those four tunes over at Grateful Dead of the Day.
