On this day back in 1969, the Dead made their infamous appearance on Hugh Hefner’s Playboy After Dark show. Bear dosed the coffee on set, resulting in an insane night at the mansion. Throughout, Bobby enjoyed himself - and the playmates - thoroughly. Jerry played it real cool, telling stories about buck knives and serpents. And the Dead delivered a sweet and haunting Mountains of the Moon, a raging Stephen, and tasty, but really clipped, Lovelight. Watch the whole segment and read more about the night at Grateful Dead of the Day.
By 1978, Tom Ribe had been a Head for a decade. But it was on January 18th that he finally caught the Dead in the flesh. Listen to the story of his first show on Heads' Tales.
Happy Birthday to the great saxophonist, Martin Fierro. Besides sitting in with the Dead throughout the fall 1973 East Coast tour, playing on Wake of the Flood, and adding his horn to Legion of Mary, Martin became an early member of Steve Kimock's Zero, cementing his status in jam band history. Read more about Martin and his time with the Dead while listening to his contributions on one of those fall '73 shows over at Grateful Dead of the Day.
