In ’71 and ’72 the Dead could bust off a Dark Star from the deepest depths of space or romp through a feedback-heavy Caution. But day in and day out, the boys were cooking up perfection in more tight and contained forms. And on this show from '72 we have Sugaree without an extended, meditative run in the latter half and a six-minute Playin’ that somehow contains all the energy and electric excitement of a twenty-minute version. All the music is brilliantly conceived and consistently sharper and more emotive than it is at probably any other period in the Dead’s long history. Read our meditation on the band's sound at this moment or just enjoy the music at Grateful Dead of the Day.
