There is so much to love about any 1968 show, but the one from this day is an odyssey of the first order. Things start off deep in the swamps with a monster Alligator, punctuated by Pig’s bawling vocals. Later, Jerry takes us riding across the playa at sunset with a Spanish Jam. And, after going for a blast through the outer rim with Dark Star, the boys lead the way into a mesmerizing, acid-drenched childhood playhouse with a China Cat and Eleven. Take the entire trip at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day in 1978 at the University of Oregon, Jerry threw down the Close Encounters Jam. But as good as that moment is by itself, it is even better coming in the midst of a mighty and inventive section from Terrapin, through Drums and The Other One, on to the Close Encounters, and then off on a bright and rangy Stephen that might just be the real highlight of the entire show before a sensational Not Fade Away. Listen to it all.
