On this day in '84, the Dead - with Brent on vocals - busted out I Just Want to Make Love to You, which they had not played since Pigpen sang the vocals back in 1966. The boys also opened with a darker, more brooding Dancin’ in the Streets and laid down a tremendous Terrapin. Check out all the heady treats from this night at the Ventura Fairgrounds at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The Dead were locked in and dealing, starting with Box of Rain and delivering a kaleidoscopic and exploratory Eyes and a beautiful Wheel - all cushy and dream-like - in the heart of the second set on this evening in 1990. Brent is on fire throughout, putting in some phenomenal keys, goading Jerry to ever-headier heights, and goosing the audience with Hey Pocky Way. And that makes the far too prescient Knockin' On Heaven's Door encore, just days before Brent's passing, all the more funereal and melancholy. Fire one up for our brother and give the show a listen.
