On this day back in 1990, Brent played his last show with the Grateful Dead. He went out in style, putting up some phenomenal keys and vocals. But the most touching moment - in hindsight, of course - came during The Weight encore when he sang his last line: "I gotta go, but my friends can stick around." Rest in peace, brother. Check out the entire show, including that tear-jerker encore, at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Watch the entirety of Brent's last show with the Dead, including that incredible encore of The Weight on this beautiful remastered video.
A few San Francisco hippies, led by Reggie Williams, renovated an old vaudeville theater in 1966 and '67 to create the Straight on the Haight, a community center and music venue. The Dead had a rich relationship with the venue, including playing a number of benefits for the project, headlining the Straight Theater Christening, and practicing there regularly. And, on this night in 1967, they shared the bill with Big Brother and the Holding Company. Though we do not have the full show, we do have Neal Cassady rapping - surely on acid and who knows what else - for about fifteen minutes while the Dead occasionally jam in the background. At the end of our recording, Pig and the band start in on what seems like a luscious Lovelight. Take in this little snippet of the scene.
