Playing nearly thirty tunes on this day in 1972, the Dead laid down a heady show. But of all the nuggets from this one, it is the Dark Star that really stands out. Billy is on fire throughout, lacing the song with alternatingly roaring and subtle rhythmic displays and an eight-minute solo. All the while Keith and Phil trade licks and Jerry wails. Treat your ears and give the show a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On the last night of the six-show tour with Dylan in summer 1987, the Dead played phenomenally, though the tunes, especially the Bird Song, Terrapin, and Other One, were a bit attenuated to make room for the extra set. But there are no complaints as it is so great to hear the Dead together with Dylan, including on a stunning Baby Blue and ferocious Watchtower. Listen to the entire night of music.
And in that final 1987 show with Dylan, the Dead opened their second set with Shakedown, which you can watch in all its glory.
