On July 28th back in 1973, the Grateful Dead were part of the biggest rock concert ever to that point - 600,000 strong at Watkins Glen. And while the playing was lights out then, the better music might have come from the soundcheck - a nearly two hour long full-on concert - on this day 42 years ago. A beatific Row Jimmy, a rare and beautiful Half-Step> It Must Have Been The Roses, and a monster Playin’ highlight the first set on this day in 1974. And the opening China Cat, replete with a mighty, vibrant jam before I Know You Rider along with the righteous romping trip of a jam at the end of US Blues provide some - just some - of the epic moments in the second half.
