Playing outside the country for the first time, the Dead shared the bill with a Janis-fronted Big Brother and the Holding Company and Quicksilver Messenger Service at the Trips Festival on this day in 1966. The Dead's music is phenomenal and utterly primal and elemental, bringing together the taffy pop of the day, their own deep roots in American music, and good old LSD. Listen to this early Dead gem at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The wind blew hard and the dust circled at the Ventura Fairgrounds on this day in 1983. But with the sun shining and temps in the 70s, the weather was otherwise beautiful for the Dead's afternoon set. The band fired up with a China> Rider, Jerry belting out "I wish I was headlight on a northbound train" just as one rumbled up the coast alongside the venue. The Sugaree to open the second along with a Playin'> China Doll and Truckin' out of Space are just a few of the other highlights. For some of those, like the mass skinny-dipping in the Pacific after the show, you just had to be there. But for the rest of the treats, you can listen in.
On this day in 1973, Jerry received a suspended sentence - perhaps because everyone from the arresting officer to the court officials thought he was the friendliest guy - for drug charges stemming from a routine speeding stop in New Jersey while him and Hunter were traveling between shows. Read about the arrest and sentencing at Grateful Dead of the Day.
