On this day in '74, the boys laid out a three-set masterpiece with the Wall of Sound. Highlights abound, but the 30-minute Truckin' with Mind Left Body and Spanish Jams is the crux, otherworldly and totally face-melting. Be sure to check out the laid back and groovy Eyes into an ethereal China Doll, the speckled rapture of the Weather Report Suite, and all the other treats as well at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The Dead debuted Sugaree and Mr. Charlie on the Yale football field on this day in 1971. But there is also a spellbinding Dark Star that wanders through a spectral, psychedelic landscape, finds the Feeling Groovy theme for a while, and then goes on to reconnoiter the furthest galaxies before finally turning it over to Bird Song. And, really, there is so much more here, including a superlative NFA> GDTRFB> Darkness Jam> NFA, an absolutely beatific Me and Bobby McGee, intense China> Rider, and raunchy, off-the-hook Hard to Handle. But just give it all a listen.
The Dead always seemed to deliver at Manor Downs, and this night from 1982 is no different. The show gets going with a smoking Alabama Getaway> Promised Land and doesn't look back. But it is the monster second set you are really going to want to key in on, beginning with Scarlet> Fire and including a sensational Eyes Of The World and absolutely transcendent Morning Dew. Watch it all on remastered video.
Martha and the Vandellas released the original version of Dancing In The Street on this day in 1964. Two years later, the Dead played their first version of the song, dripping with lysergic energy. After the hiatus, the Dead turned the tune into a discofied barn burner, releasing it as Dancin' In The Streets on Terrapin Station. Read more about Dancin' In The Streets and sample some of the greatest Dead versions at Grateful Dead of the Day.
