The Dead were loose and freewheeling, and the crowd was loving it on this day in '78. An insane opening Sugaree, sizzling They Love Each Other, and top-notch Lazy Lightnin'> Supplication highlight the first set. And while the Estimated> Eyes is the crux of the second half, don't miss the post-Drums action with a spell-binding Wharf Rat into a downright wacky Truckin'> Iko Iko> Around and Around to see it out. Give it all a listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Morning Dew> Dark Star> Stephen> Eleven - absolutely as face-melting as it sounds - opened the show at Chicago's Electric Theater on this night in 1969. But that was not all the Dead had in them as they played a funky Casey Jones and a gorgeous, elegiac Baby Blue. And then there is the closing Lovelight, a 35+ minute reign of terror with Pig at the helm. The rest of the band backs him up with some unbelievable improvisational jamming, but it is Pig and his rapping that steals the stage. Give it all a listen.
