In one of his last shows, Brent delivered the goods, shooting off on delicious runs - often aided by Jerry - at every opportunity. The rest of the band was out of sight as well, particularly on the Standing on the Moon> He's Gone> Jam into Drums. Listen to the whole thing at Grateful Dead of the Day. And feast your eyes on the China>Rider of the show, with Brent in all his glory and Jerry in sweet cutoff jean shorts right here.
One of the Deadhead rites of passage during summer in the 80s was the run at Alpine, and on this night in 1984, the Dead opened a two-day stand there with a rocking Iko. The energy, from both the band and the crowd, is off the charts throughout the night, hitting its apex with Brent and Jerry's interplay on Dear Mr. Fantasy. But there is so much more insanity here, including a ripe and wacky Why Don't We Do It in the Road and an alluring, faster paced Bird Song. Just listening to the audience tape of this one will send you back; check it out.
