After a run of some great stuff in the first half, Jerry takes center stage with a Ship of Fools, providing a transitory, reflective moment, punctuated by his sonorous guitar licks, setting up a spell-binding batch of music, starting with Estimated, rolling through The Other One> Eyes of the World, a Wharf Rat out of Space, and then a rare late show Franklin’s Tower, which feeds into Sugar Mags. As if that was not enough, Terrapin opens a three-song encore, completed by One More Saturday Night and Werewolves of London. Don't sleep on this great show from Red Rocks in 1978; listen to it now at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Today was the last show before everything changed for the Dead back in 1987. In the Dark hit the store shelves two days prior, and Touch of Grey was already moving up the Billboard charts, with its crowds of Touch Heads not far behind. But on this evening, the Dead played within the intimate confines of the 10,000-seat Roanoke Civic Center. The Scarlet> Fire is off the charts as the Dead actually play the building. There is also a Crazy Fingers out of Space and a rare Comes A Time. But don't miss the vamping on He's Gone and the Black Muddy River encore, both unintended elegies for the scene as it was this night in Roanoke. Give it all a listen...
Originally released as View From The Vault, this video of today’s 1990 show is remastered from there with a Charlie Miller soundboard to back it up. Don't miss that bright opening Touch Of Grey, epic Eyes, and haunting Black Peter, among other treats.
