Today in 1995, the boys played that infamous, melancholy show from Soldier Field, the last the Dead ever gave us. The music is rather flawed, but there is a lovely So Many Roads. Not only is it rendered in an intense and near perfect form, but you will surely get chills as Jerry sings those lyrics about a troubled soul and his desire to just “take me home.” Of course, you also need to listen to the Black Muddy River encore, Jerry’s last song and, thus, absolutely haunting in retrospect. Give it all a listen, read more about the night, and give thanks for an incredible 30-year run at Grateful Dead of the Day.
While much of the final show is desultory, the So Many Roads is a real treat, all the more so here on remastered video. Take in Jerry and the boys one more time.
In front of 80,000 - the floor crowded with Heads who had jumped down - the Dead opened the show on this day in 1989 with a smoking Shakedown. A tight, upbeat China> Rider and Bird Song are some of the other highlights. But the post-Space dance fest takes the cake. It is classic stadium Dead ending with a monumental Not Fade Away to see the set out before a beautiful Brokedown encore. Treat your ears; click through!
