Hey there! Happy June!
Security was tight - and rough - for the heads on hand at the Coliseum on this day in 1991. But the Dead, spurred on by an all-star effort from Bruce, made it all worth while, opening with a heady Shakedown, delivering a best-ever Picasso Moon, and roaring through a Playin'> Uncle John's. Relax and listen to the entire show without worrying about any of the rent-a-cops.
Sometime around this date back in 1966, the Dead hit the studio for the first time, and we are fortunate to have some of the outtakes. What you will find is a mind-blowing combination of surf music, bluegrass, heavy Pig organ, and pop, with a dash of psychedelia, all rolled into one. For instance, take a listen to You Don’t Have to Ask, which includes some fiery picking and turns more and more proto-punk as the tune goes on. It doesn’t sound that disturbing now, but surely would have freaked out the mainstream and had people hiding their daughters back in ’66. Give all the outtakes a listen and read more.
