In the second of the Dead and the Allman Brothers epic stadium shows in the nation's capital, the boys pulled out all the stops. It begins with a perfect first set, capped by a riveting Bird Song and monster Playin'. The second gets started with Eyes> Stella and just keeps building from there to a mind-blowing, face-melting Dark Star> He’s Gone> Wharf Rat> Truckin’, Sugar Mags. Then the boys - along with Merl Saunders and a couple of the Allmans - come out for a third set filled with a few rarities and a familiar, but oh-so hot NFA> GDTRFB> Drums> NFA. Sit back and listen to the entire night of music at Grateful Dead of the Day.
Just four shows into their return from hiatus, on this day in 1976, the band is returning to form and then some. The first set is extraordinary and not least because of the gorgeous Mission in the Rain, just the second of the five the Dead played. The second half includes a massive Help> Slip> Franklin's and a mighty Let It Grow, orchestral in its grandeur and complexity. There is also an unusual late set Friend of the Devil and a boogie-down Dancin' to cap it. Give the show a listen.
