On this day in 1980, the Dead were playing a monster Scarlet> Fire in Portland, Oregon, when Mount St. Helens erupted just 60 miles north. While the band went through an outrageous rendition of Fire on the Mountain, a thick coating of ash descended on everything in the lot, making it difficult for Heads - and the band - to make the next show in Seattle. Just another day in the life of the Grateful Dead. Listen to the entire show and read more about the historic Fire on the Mountain at Grateful Dead of the Day.
The Dead played amongst the gorgeous ancient sedimentary structures at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on this day in 1984. And, boy, what a night it was, furiously fast-paced and raging. First set highlights include the opening Alabama Getaway> GSET as well as Little Red Rooster and Althea. And the second has a breakneck headiness from the opening Scarlet> Touch, right on through the Estimated> Eyes, and on to the Other One near the end. Give it all a listen and read more about Red Rocks.
