Another 1974 Wall of Sound show, and another beauty of a night. Highlights abound, particularly the Eyes> China Doll in the first set and the WRS> Other One> It's a Sin Jam> Stella in the second, not to mention the Morning Dew encore. But the whole night is off the charts. Give it a good listen at Grateful Dead of the Day.
On this day in '67, the Dead played the Monterey Pops Festival, which they were instrumental in getting off the ground. It is often said - about Monterey, Woodstock, and elsewhere - that the Dead blew it on the big stages. But the music - Cold Rain and Snow, a sweet Viola Lee, and heady Alligator> Caution - is nothing to scoff at. Of course, the Dead did not quite have the stage presence of the two acts who they were sandwiched between: The Who, who destroyed their instruments after a devastating set, and Jimi Hendrix, who lit his guitar on fire and scorched the show. Listen to the Dead's set and judge the boys' performance for yourself.
How about watching the Grateful Dead just a few shows after returning from hiatus? Indeed! Check out video of the second set from the Capitol Theater in Jersey from this day in '76.
On June 18, 2011, the world lost the Socrates of the Saxophone, Clarence Clemons. While Clarence is best known for his work with the E Street Band, he played several shows with the Dead and had even considered moving in with Bobby and Jerry. Celebrate Clarence's life and read all about his relationship with the Dead here.
